The Lisbon Aquarium is a Portuguese oceanarium located in the capital, Lisbon. It is part of the Ocean Pavilion, located in the Parc des Nations, a district created to host the 1998 Lisbon International Exhibition “Ocean, Future of Mankind”.
Designed by a team from the architectural firm Cambridge Seven Associates (en) and the American architect Peter Chermayeff, who had already built those in Genoa, Sea Life Sydney Aquarium (en), Baltimore and Osaka, it is built on an enclosed stretch of water and linked to the reception area by a bridge. It is one of the largest public aquariums in Europe, and its unique oceanarium with marine ecosystems is the third largest in the world. The Oceanário receives around one million visitors every year. A large central aquarium, with 5 million liters of salt water.
Four marine habitats create the illusion of a single aquarium and ocean.
The tour takes place on two levels, on land and underwater, traversing the temperate, tropical and cold waters of the planet’s different oceans.
A visit to the Oceanarium is interesting for all ages. That’s why this tour is specially designed for senior groups.
Time to remember and look to the future
Looking to the future means being able to learn from the past. In a country of fishermen, fishing today is more efficient thanks to new technologies, but it’s not quite true that there are many more fish in the sea”.
Like those who spoil their grandchildren and fill tables to feed their offspring, it’s up to all of us to take care of the 200 million people on this planet who depend on fishing to survive – how can we make a difference with the fish we eat?
It’s neither too late nor too early: it’s the right time to find out what’s going on in the ocean and learn the best way to make a difference.
ONE is probably the show not to be missed if you visit the Lisbon Aquarium!
If you haven’t noticed yet, Lisbon is a city cradled by the ocean; it lives by it. Lisbon is ecologically committed, and One is a brilliant, fascinating and touching testimony to the relationship between humans and the marine world.
ONE is a declaration of love, a declaration of life.
