Strategically built on the north bank of the Tagus River between 1514 and 1520, for the defense of Lisbon, it is one of the jewels of architecture during the reign of D. Manuel I.

The Belém tower is a reference in architecture, a symbol of the specific nature of the country which passes through a privileged dialogue with other cultures and civilizations. Guardian of the Universality and Individuality of Portugal, the monument confirmed its status when, in 1983, it was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

What is the history of the Tower of Belém?

Ce monument fut érigé dans le but de service à la fois de porte d’entrée dans la ville de Lisbonne mais aussi de système de défense contre les éventuelles invasions et attaques venant du Tage.

Ce rempart constituait un point stratégique protégeant également le Monastère des Hiéronymites, lesquels constituaient des points stratégiques pour envahir la ville.

Le Roi Jean II du Portugal(1455-1495), est à l’origine de cet édifice, au même titre que les  forteresses de Cascais et de São Sebastião da Caparica.
